Nuu-chah-nulth Mountain Man

I love a reference to the area in any interior, and for Christmas, my husband received this special tribal mask by Patrick Amos, called “Nuu-chah-nulth Mountain Man” He watches over our little part of the mountain now. Nuu-chah-nulth is the First Nations Band closest to Ucluelet, about two hours away; I know many personally. I love the cedar hair and crazed look on his face, like he just spotted something in the bush…Mountain Man would scare anyone off, but is beautifully crafted, and somehow makes me feel protected.

Mom’s Spare Room- a Christmas Gift

My mom has always been there to support me…and this is my old teenage room at their home in Ucluelet. Last Christmas I gave her a rendering of her spare room, and when she was away on holidays, I came and did a redo to match. It’s a budget job, but it brought tears to her eyes; something I will always remember. My dad said it looked like the homes section of the Sun, and my mom said she didn’t want to use it, it looked so nice. I love my parents!

My sister and I went to Norwoods for dinner and had some great wine…and her dog Bailey was part of the weekend too. Also, there are some pictures of the progress and before shots too…headboard is IKEA, matelassé set is Homesense and vase is from Superstore.

Allot of work, but the gift of time is always worth your efforts, and won’t go un-noticed ;) the budget was under a thousand dollars, including paint and draperies…thanks IKEA!

Visualizing a 70’s Split

Lots of times, a client or contractor will hire me to help visualize their ideas, or ask me to give them some ideas…I like the schematic phase of design, so I am always thrilled to do it. I guess I didn’t need to tell you that, since my blog name gives away my fondness for that part of the design process. It’s doing some quick programming, extruding a 2d plan, and imagining materials for the space.

These drawings are for a realtor trying to sell a 70’s split level home, which is in need of upgrading. Part of the programming included taking a peek into the attic to determine which way the ceiling joists ran, in order open up the volume of space on that side of the home. I’ve included new lighting and finishes, along with a dark stained floor and ceilings. I have designed an all white kitchen, including integrated appliances and a walk out to a new deck.

These drawings are included in packages the agent is using for particular properties, because it’s difficult for them or their clients to imagine an upgraded space, and the small investment has paid off several times for them in the competitive Vancouver market.

A new deck space is created by pushing the kitchen into the existing DR, and adding double frameless doors. The side yard of this home was previously inaccessible and underused. Re-doing the fireplace facade in large stone or concrete slabs modernizes, keeping the function of an open flame. Yellow metal accents tie the interior elements together, including hanging pendants over the new island, where an existing wall once stood. The dark floor is complemented by a large custom rug, which keeps the space from becoming too dark.

The new double doors open to a new deck, which steps down immediately for privacy, and to fulfil the FSR (percentage of home vs. non-permeable surface on the property as a whole) requirements. Fencing at 6’ and concrete pavers added later, as well as black iron furniture keep the look simple, so you can imagine feeling at home in the space…maybe even buy it!

The price of real estate is high in Vancouver, so an 800K home with 250K of work is still a great investment, because homes in this area are selling for over a million to 1.5 million. Also, there is never a better time than before you move into a home to renovate it. I say live with your great reno right out of the gate, and sell it in 7-9 years to retain your investment.

This is going to be my best year yet. After FB’s Breast Cancer Campaign where women announced a trip to Europe, I decided to do it for real. It just felt that good. I originally announced that I was going to live in Paris for 5 months through FB…so the next week, I decided that I was going to live in Amsterdam for a month. DH bought me business class tickets directly from Vancouver, and I will be meeting up with him in Paris and LIege.

Until then, I will be working hard to take the whole month of March off. I have a private workshop weekend in February, an install and photo shoot planned for January, and a crapload of renderings to do…and it’s the first Christmas I haven’t gone to mom’s…so the kids are coming here for the holidays, and it will be a full house. Life is good.

Excited for a client who’s inspections are around the corner, and can see the drywall at the end of the tunnel…lol. This project is a good lesson in upgrading without tearing the whole house down. Just by removing two walls in the breakfast/family/hall area and updating finishes, the flow and site lines are so improved!! Cant wait to see this one completed…they so deserve it. Time to get shopping ;)

Blinds…check…A/V…check…kitchen dwgs …check…laundry room floor …check…now I know how my clients feel…I am so impatient!

This little area off the kitchen has become one of my favourites because of the light and site lines.

Right now, I am having a dining chair dilemma…textural?…chrome to match barstools?…armchairs?…upholstered?…comfortable?…modern?…something my dad can relate to? Lots of styles work with Live Edge tables…I am looking at either the Nelson Swag leg in white with chrome legs or wicker tub chairs to match existing ones or Klismos style chrome chairs with white leather seats. I’ve also thought of upholstered wing chairs for the ends with the Klismos chairs, but don’t want to obstruct the view. Thoughts?

I think I am leaning towards the Klismos…love the bling!

Ever thought of putting your ideas into 3D? Designer Jacquie Cao hired me to draw this kitchen, after she imagined the great nautical lighting, a gourmet stove and fan as the star of the show, a walk in pantry and a great end grain butcher block. She also eliminated some concepts like the cooktop niches and looked at two options for the countertop…wood and marble (I used the same drawing for both, rendering the marble first).

Splashes of coral really make this kitchen pop…great job Jacquie…I am sure your clients are loving it!

I just submitted dwgs to a text on Interior Design Presentation (her 5th edition)…will share it with you when it all comes together over the next year, so it got me thinking about my process, which is different for every design situation. This DR is a good example, and one I use often for final presentations; start with a 3D rendering with a view photo imposed in the background (import your AutoCAD dwg to save time, and use an actual site photo), print 2 copies, then overlay a piece of trace or rag paper to create a line drawing, render with architectural markers, and cut the view out from the spare print, and paste it into the finished rendering.

Cottage or Camping?

Are you a cottage or camping person? I’m off camping at the end of Aug, so I’ve been thinking about how to make it as luxurious as possible. I am also am looking at my to-do list, wondering where I am going to find this time…lol…it’s the move; it’s taken allot out of me, created a large whole home project and has been physically exhausting with the sorting, staging, moving etc…! I owe visits to Patricia at PVE, and Joyce at Canadian Originals…and intend on a long magazine and blog read this weekend to catch up. Don’t you think it’s getting harder to be inside all day, now that the nice weather has arrived?

A Little Play Time

Charley is a busy 6 year old, and his sister Kyra is only 2; their mom wanted old time play- no electronics, just classic fun. I created a puppet show area with a hidden passage through a pivoted bookshelf, is a place for costumes and puppets on hooks, and…well…because children love to hide. The bunk is painted in chalkboard paint, and with my son’s suggestion, can be a pirate ship one day, then a castle, spaceship or train the next. It also doubles as a bunk for stay-overs. The ladder is removable for when Kyra is using the space, but for Charley, is a clear divider for the “boys only” level.

There is a space for arts and crafts, lots of IKEA storage and Flor tiles for comfort. The paper is Graham and Brown, and allows the child to paste and paint on the walls! The primary palette is classic in yellow, red and blue, grounded by a black chalkboard paint, which is also magnetized. It’s only a 12x12x9H space, but feels much larger, by keeping lots of open space in the center, and shelving that you can see through. Oh, to be a child again!!

And…I am officially midlife today…yup 45 years young…having lunch with friends, some time for myself, and enjoying the city…it’s been 10 years now, living in Vancouver…weird, and strange to move on to a “smaller” life.

We sold the house and this is the new house on Vancouver Island…I move end of May…

It’s been a busy couple of months…photographing projects, rendering commissions, e-design projects, a couple of bathroom renos, and packing up my house to sell and move…but I have felt disconnected from my blog family…

Airy Girls Bedroom

This used to be my 23 year old son’s room before I staged it as an airy girly room for staging our house…I had the opportunity to make a girls room after all…lol.… if only for a few months. All for under 300 bucks including mouldings', paint, lighting, new electrical…and furniture with bedding. It can be done…Brian didn’t believe me. Thanks IKEA :)

Hence, my absence from blogging lately. Wish us luck…a few steps closer to that loft space in the city :)

Granville Loft – The Photos

Last month I finally had professional photos taken of my Granville Loft project by the very talented Heather Ross…I think the photos turned out great. The space is now soft and hard, which was the goal, because the building is concrete with industrial accents. The best formula for a room is the careful mixing the design principles resulting in harmony, and I’m really proud of this one. Thanks Rennae! And thanks Heather :)

Colouring Book – Sky Lounge Colour Rendering

A white aerie with references to nature’s floor…wood and trees brought up to the 34th floor Sky Lounge…I think some well deserved time with the ladies hanging out on the sky beds or wing chairs is due. Whites and neutrals are difficult to render, but with layering tonal grays, adding texture with fine liners and practicing restraint with the pens, the idea of a high gloss floor and white upholstery comes through.

It’s a lounge on the 34th floor with a accessible green roof. I have designed the aerie with the concept of merging the earth and sky, taking bits of both and lending them to each other…that’s how I’ve chosen my finishes which I will render into the drawing, but chose your own concept if you like, and try rendering this perspective in fineliners and markers. Catherine asked me via email if I have ever tried watercolour…I admit, yes, but it’s not something I feel I '”get”…I feel more comfortable with the control of markers and the texture you can create (below). For presentations I think watercolour fits lots of concepts nicely, but doesn’t offer the intensity of colour that markers do…just the point I would guess. Last year, I met the ladies of MH Studio in NYC…they are super talent, and warm, and their studio itself is stunning with views of the Chrysler Building. This is the second project I have done for MH, and was thrilled to see the after shots of the space they designed for the Holiday House in NYC for the Susan G Koman Foundation. It’s also fun to see the after pictures to see what has has been changed from the spec.

Small Space Study #3 Clandestine Barn

Could you live in 750 square feet? This barn has a great space downstairs with a roomy entry, and studio/office space with double carriage doors which doubles it’s square footage. It features a double height stone wall and fireplace, and gourmet Wolf range included in a full cook’s kitchen. One change has been made…by code, I would think a set of doors off the LR area to the deck and stairs for egress is necessary. Living in the treetops, gourmet meals and natural iconic chairs which reference nature are all parts of the formula for living.

The barn serves double duty, where the bottom floor with stone fireplace can double as celebration space; clean off the painting table, and set a rustic scene for a meal in the painting studio in either season. In summer, you open the carriage doors, line the long table with flowers from the garden, and in winter you light the fire and scatter pumpkins about. Curtains on k-track from the beams on both floors keep the open feeling, but give you a privacy option.

A large part of the budget would be allocated is the post and beam construction, stone wall and FP. I also picture accordion doors like NanaWall in the LR, and of course, that Wolf range.

More to come on this one…it’s a great way to see it before you build it, and ask the question…could I live in a small space? For this couple, planning on travelling part of the year, looking for privacy, who are downsizing, need a painting studio, and run a home based design business, I think so.

Canadian Originals

I had a wonderful lunch today with some very talented ladies, and much was discussed. We are all from the greater Vancouver area, all either Interior Designers, Decorators, Craftspeople or Design Enthusiasts. But the biggest similarity is that we blog…this wonderful world of design blogging.

It’s definitely time for a website upgrade, so yesterday my very gracious loft client let us in for the day to photograph the work I did for her last year…I have another client’s space to shoot the end of next month, and look forward to a new website sometime this year. Seems no matter how qualified you are, the pretty shots bring in the clients, hence the investment.

Can’t wait to share more of this space with you…and thanks to Heather of Heather Ross in House who let me borrow a few accessories for styling, and took some wonderful professional photos (these are just captures)…do stop by and visit Heather…she is at Granville and 6th (on 6th) here in Vancouver. Small Case Study #2 Genevieve and David

After they sold the large house, you would think Genevieve and her husband of 45 years, David would be travelling abroad or settling into a nice retirement community, but that is not what they are about. Genevieve worked as a book editor and lived in South Africa, where she met her husband David, an events planner, so they have done their share of travelling. Later, they had three girls and raised a family in a large modern house in Burnaby. A few years ago, they bought a 1400 square foot condo in Surrey close to family and needed some ideas for the downsize.

The reason for the detailed introduction is to be clear about the importance of your lifestyle on your interior space. How will your life change, and what parts of it will stay the same…that is the important design question. A fresh start at any stage of your life can be cleansing, but your style shouldn't be washed down the drain.

Genevieve has lots of books when I met her originally. I was struck by the volume of books…obviously a strong indicator of what is important to her. When I asked what she valued more than anything, it was her library, and she was quite upset about having to get rid of even one. I had different thoughts about her beloved collection. You design around your lifestyle, so I suggested she take the books with her, and build bookcases around the whole perimeter of the living/dining space. They would envelope and hug her like they always have. Besides, keeping your favourite collection in tact tempers the life change of retirement and downsizing. This also meant that the other smaller collections that didn’t mean as much could go. It’s impossible to move everything from a five bedroom house into a 1400 square foot condo.

So, we would work in the books as a design element, and incorporate a library type dining room with wing chairs and lots of light for reading (as I approach 45, I find myself needing more light to read). It’s an unusual formula to space planning, but they don’t entertain formally any more, except for their monthly book club meeting, and are mostly invited to the kids’ homes for holidays. It’s a lifestyle that they are looking forward to embracing.

Two love seats worked much better for the couple, because of the depth of the bookshelves and the symmetry the pair create. The bookshelves are made of walnut, a traditional wood without yellow or pink undertones, and are washed with light from the directional ceiling pots, highlighting their importance. By including a few artefacts from their collection, small lamps and some serving pieces, the primary task of the space is revealed; if only slightly.

Genevieve wanted jewel tones, so we used emerald, ruby and sapphire hues for the upholstery. The sofas are trimmed in nail heads and upholstered in deep sapphire cotton velvet…David loves the texture. A back wall is painted in a deep ruby colour to highlight a lighter work of art, and has a relationship to a couple of smaller items like a pillow and blanket. Hanging your pictures, art and even a mirror on the bookshelf is a great trick for making it read as one surface and two transparent side tables open up the corridor, and provide flexibility.

The couple is moving in the Spring, and have already changed their book club invites to read “David and Genevieve’s Library”.

Schematic Life Rendering Workshop March 10,11,12

Looking forward to my first workshop in Vancouver, and have enjoyed talking to those have contacted me by phone and email. Some publication work and some ID projects have been keeping me busy, so I have not done a mass mail out yet, but please give me a call if you are interested in joining us here in Vancouver in March, as I need at least 6 to go forward.

Here is some more information:

Create stunning presentations with minimal effort…leverage what you already create for a project, and win more contracts. Do you ever think…”if I could just show them what it would look like”, or wish you could draw more effectively in front of a client? In this day of “how fast can you get it done”, I have figured out some shortcuts and tricks that free us from those long hours doing a single one point perspective.

As a designer, drawing is an essential tool, and computer renderings can be cold, and timely to render effectively. Hand drawings have been making a comeback, and part of the reason is the conceptual nature of them…clients don’t expect it to look exactly like the drawing…yet, it instils confidence.

The other component of the workshop is the collaborative nature of designers when they get together…it’s important for us to discuss WHY and WHEN and to WHAT extent we draw and render a project. When is a simple sketch enough, and when do we invest the time to create a more detailed rendering with colour?

Starting with a wonderful meal at the Rain City Grill, then 2 days of drawing and rendering interiors at Kwantlen Polytechnic (near the airport for the last day). March 10,11,12

We will be sketching by hand, mostly, but some 3 modeling underlays as well, which I will provide if you do not use 3D software. I thought we would end early on the last day (Saturday), so you could make it home for that one last day off before the work week starts ;)

I will bring the larger tools, and there will be a small materials list. The cost of the workshop is $1395 plus tax. This includes dinner the first night, use of required larger tools, and two days of instruction.

You will go home with a current project rendered in full colour…I am looking forward to meeting you!

I was going through old files, and came across these early SketchUp model renderings from my final year of college. It is an adaptive re-use project of a local fish plant, from working plant to a boat in eco-resort. If you are a student of interior design, and read my blog, please know that this is the most freedom you may ever have, as budget and time issues (not dynamic ones, at least) are not working against you- so push it and have fun. I learned SketchUp in a month; it’s that intuitive.

My favourite part of the project was the sunken glass tide line room where you could watch the tide deposit shell life. The rooms are in the old cold storage building, and the spa was the shrimp room…so much fun. The sushi bar was called Kimoto’s after a local Japanese founding family. I thought it had a real Cannery Row meets Long Beach Lodge feel.

I love this city…I can’t get enough of it, and this trip was one of the best yet. Carol, an interior designer from the blog CREED and of Carol Reed Design, out of Toronto joined me for a week-long whirlwind trip to the city. We started with Kipps Bay, took in the work of renderer (or should I say artist) Jeremiah Goodman at the NYSID, had dinner with the wonderful Patricia, of PVE at Swizz…shared lunch at Carmines, dinner at Ruby Foos, saw “Promises, Promises” at the Broadway theatre.

We walked through the park, ate gelato…yes it was that warm…t-shirt weather, actually. We stopped by to see Francine at Interieurs…her showroom is so amazing! I met the wonderful women of MH Studio in NYC…they are doing beautiful work, and their office looks right at the Chrysler Building. I also had the pleasure of meeting new designer friends, Lisa, Doreena and Oregon designer, Barbara, once again. My husband showed up for the last night, and we went for a nice lunch and shopping at Macy’s, where I scored a Calvin Klein coat for 50% off…it truly is a wonderful life!

Since my to do list is longer than my unanswered emails, and Carol has now brought me into this Twitter world, which I can already see is going to consume even more of my time, I am going to share just SOME of the highlights of my trip, and get right to work.

Blue on Blue…an e-design in Surrey

Cookie cutter condos don’t have to be boring…we are building the wall up between the kitchen, and infusing this Surrey condo in blue linen, velvets and prints. White stitching on the custom sofa, and tufted panels on the wall create a tactile, layered night time palette, when the client is mostly home. The sconces and pots are all on dimmers, and the banquette and round pedestal table with a curvy bench offers versatility in a small space.

Design without Drawing?

I had a discussion with a design professional the other day. He was saying that he overheard a seminar of designers talking about the act of drawing and how it’s attached to the design process. One designer in the crowd said that they don’t draw, and never have, and didn’t see the importance of it. The rest of the room disagreed, and lumped the skill of drawing directly to the process of design.

I personally, don’t know many designers that can sell a concept to a client without some type of drawing as part of the presentation. It’s a designer’s chance to look at the details, work out standard dims to address budget issues, and check proportion. I depend on my hand, experience and intuition, which comes from putting pen to paper.

When you hire a designer, please appreciate all of the hours that go into lining things up perfectly, into appropriate specifications of FF&E (furniture, fixtures and equipment), and perspective drawings that show you how the surfaces will work together.

So, I would say WHAT? Design without drawing? How did you arrive at the design plan? How do you get your client to sign off…and where is the joy in the process? I have just seen too many filler panels between bathroom vanities and bathtubs to be convinced otherwise. Work it out on paper first.

Be Messy

Cynthia writes and asks “How do you get your lines so straight and the rendering to look realistic?”

My answer is “be messy”. Remember when we learned how to type, way back? My Office Procedures 11 teacher had us type as fast as we could, not worrying about mistakes…that’s the same advice I would give to Cynthia…be loose and messy to start, go over each line quickly with purpose…go over that line until it excites you in it’s intent…it’s fun…and how you get better.

These are some looser 1hr renderings, each from an existing space, where I added or changed almost everything…come out of plan and elevation world, where you get to see all the surfaces and how they work together.

A room with an amazing view and floor to ceiling windows is a dream of mine..and this one was a lesson in proportion and restraint. With the family dog taking his chances!

Which rendering appeals to you the most? My intention was to insert a view, and wasn’t as happy with it as I thought; sometimes a simple line and a bump can give the gesture of landscape, and not become the focal point. Not that I would complain about this view!

Interior Design and a Deep Sleep

How to Get Your Client to Sign-Off

Sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words. A client who wants to go a bit more modern without giving up her classic pieces couldn’t picture what I meant by “mixing it up a bit”, so I took a few hours to do these couple of drawings for her…sure enough, we are going ahead with the custom pair of nightstands and TV credenza for the MBR. Talking with your hands can only take you so far.

Also, the toilet has been moved to create a symmetrical hallway to the bathroom, and a bathroom vanity area. The client thought it would make the room feel to small (still trying to convince her on that one). I would go for room that works before size in a minute. But, like I always say, I don’t have to live there.

Outdoor Dining- West Coast Style

I’ve been working on designing a new build with a contractor- here’s a sneak peak of the outdoor dining area, which he is using for marketing the property.

I was influenced by the Restoration Hardware look this year, and I think it came out in this space. I love the large scale of their pieces, which dictated the size of the deck. This is a great time for the designer to be involved in the project, because furniture arrangement/light switch locations etc…are all lifestyle related, which the designer takes much time considering.

Work has been picking up…has anyone else noticed this? I hope it’s a good sign…real estate has taken such a kicking, and ID rides the shirt tails of the construction industry.

The Moorage Display Suite

The developers who built the Moorage condos in Ucluelet are quality builders. Sometimes builders just particle board a building together to minimum code, with budget driven materials (meaning cheap). Not these guys…there is a quality of work under the drywall that you cannot see. The building references a nautical past, when the town was just a series of boardwalks for fisherman. Long Beach is only 15 minutes away, but a series of hidden beaches around Ucluelet give you the seclusion it’s known for. This show suite was a project I did with local resources and on a shoestring budget, but with some built-in millwork and a plumper budget, you can personalize the space like this-

Olive and Dark Blue…an Unlikely but Sophisticated Bedroom Palette

A recent e-design project where the client choose a rendering as part of her package has me excited…her Aubusson rug was the inspiration for the space, which features a pair of Barcelona stools in ivory leather and a tub chair re-upholstered in a dark blue linen by Threads/Lee Jofa. The rug has grey/putty tones with hints of blue and sage. Robert Allen’s Vesoul fabric is used with complementing silk to create a heavenly canopy bed…a dream of mine as well.

I propose Saladino lamps for scale, symmetry and transparency. The night tables from Restoration Hardware are meaty enough for the large space. Grey linens from Kravet will be used to create a bed cover, box spring cover and headboard which is also drawn from the carpet and merge the olive and blue by being common ground...a daring move, but the panelling will be painted in an mustard/olive tone to keep the palette muddy. A home of this scale (12 ft. clgs on the first floor) can take some great panelling, and the elevations show how the trim should be laid out. It’s a grand space, deserving of a grand look.

Six Objects de Vie – Ivan Meade

Ivan is a multi talented friend…his education and upbringing have moulded him into someone who is passionate, chivalrous, driven and caring. He has a magnetic personality, at ease in the elite design world, or with helping a student during a practicum in his office. As my design friend once said…”his mama raised him right”. He is also open and sharing with his business; I was lucky enough to be invited to an appreciation event the Victoria community put on for him earlier this year. That says it all about Ivan.

Recently, Ivan and his wonderful team completed a home in LA that took my breath away…with a great client at that!! It’s not a surprise he was the designer she chose, his knowledge and the way he makes you feel like it was your idea is genuine, yet calculated for your benefit…like a breath of fresh air.

Ivan understands the connection between arts, enjoying the good things in life, like friends, art, food, music and laughter, giving him a great balance. It’s my pleasure to share Ivan’s six objects he uses everyday.

Travel Sketching

I am cleaning up the office and have found my teeny sketchbook from 07 and 08…I can’t wait to go back to Amsterdam…I’m getting antsy; and think about it daily. This time want to include Ireland and Italy. The tops of the canal houses look like little hairdos to me…with eyebrows on each of the windows in brick or plaster details. Cut-outs in the shutters and old wrought iron railings are just so charming! They are just the most lovely little houses.

I love wasting the time away with a jar of cloudy water and a couple of brushes. This trip I used just the essentials…5 markers and 2 fine-liners.

Carport to Summer BBQ Room

Like many, I have a carport…I wish it was a garage, so I could paint year round, and maybe one day that will happen. The space is smothered in light in the evening, as it’s west facing, so I always thought it would be a nice place for BBQ nights, and hanging out with friends and family. Back in May I bought really inexpensive curtains and rods from Ikea, a gallon of concrete paint, a fence panel and a couple of concrete post holders (I know there is a more technical term), then went to work transforming a carport to an eating area. The key piece was a shed from Home Depot to store all the furniture off season, and the gardening gear.

We have used the space quite a bit this season, and for the winter, I will hinge back the fence panel, and regain a place to park my car.

This is what my carport has looked like most of the year.

Six Objects de Vie…Carol Reed of CREED

I came across Carol’s blog last year, and was instantly attracted to her renderings…then I took a look at her portfolio, and was smitten…Carol is a professional Interior Designer, and it shows…her work is programmed, and the design work is stunning, but you can still see the client in them…the way they live. Not just a pretty face, Carol is someone to watch for. Even know she is Canadian, I think we have the best chance of meeting up in NYC…I look forward to it!

NYC in 2 days...NYIGF

This trip to NYC had a couple of major screw ups…first, and I NEVER do this…I got a connecting flight. As you may have read in my profile, my hubby is a commercial pilot, and I am not inexperienced with these buses in the sky, so I am surprised I did it. It’s also the first time I took Delta…NEVER again on that one too!! (I’m only linking to them, so they may find this complaint)

They left us one hour to make a connection, clear customs in the connecting city, grab our bags, drop them again, and make it to a new gate. We had to wait for 15 minutes in the hot plane…they couldn’t open the doors because the customs paperwork wasn’t faxed from Vancouver. With this flight leaving so early from Vancouver, customs wasn’t even open, so that’s the reason we had to clear customs in the connecting city, which was Minneapolis.

The most hilarious part of the whole thing was when we were all stressed, and talking to each other in the customs line about not making our flight (2 windows open for 200 passengers), the third of the customs agents comes out, and says “You might as well relax, because most of you are not going to make this flight…Delta knows that they need two hours for a connection, and it was too bad for us”. Great…Mr. Personality….and of course, you can’t say anything! Such A__ H____s these guys. How about, get behind one of those booths and try to do something to help the situation????

So, I (and another 100 people) missed the connecting flight, on a Saturday, in the middle of the country, when I only had two and a half days in NYC, and I was pissed to find out I had to wait five hours for the next one!!!! GRrrrrr.

I arrived in NYC at rush hour, finally got there late Saturday, and was so tired, I crashed big time. Every flight was packed full, and it was awful.

The city was, in fact marvellous, especially Saturday when I arrived, the weather being perfect, but the next day was so so humid, it felt like you were in a steam shower…that, was of course the two days where I NEEDED to look composed for some business I was taking care of in the city. My hair was like straw.

Looking forward to my next trip in January!!…can you tell I’m not a hot weather girl?

The Gift Show at Javitz Center/Piers was really huge, and really beautiful…a few things I loved….

Effortless arrangements….Dash and Albert Rugs and Throws…Remember when I used the throw for this campsite post?

Rustic boards, furniture, John Robshaw (of Wandrlust/Woodson and Rummerfields) bedding…loving colour!

Me and a Chicken foot stool/sculpture from The City Girl Farm in Lyons Kansas. Mom, Susan is and Interior Designer, and her two daughters Emily and Sally are both Architecture and Interior Architecture/Product design students. What a creative team. They were influenced by Francois-Xavier Lalanne’s sheep ottomans. Pendants, lighting, spheres and natural curiosities were abundant…this vingette was especially pretty…I forgot the source…if you know it, please email me.

Armand Diradourian Cashmere pieces were nothing short of pure loveliness…I wish I had touch-a-vision, because they feel like butter…small scale iconic furniture for the kids at Little Nest was so adorable!

Oh, and I did some shopping as well…these great permanent pleat pants are from a textile design team in Austria called Yummy.

I bought the gold earrings at The New York Look on 5th Ave…they are my new favourites, but couldn’t find a website. You can see the polishing marks on the disks…I love that detail.

The neck piece is from db Sources Limited…they show at High Point, Dallas and NYC.

And, a new coach wallet/wristlet I can use inside a larger bag…I love the colour orange right now.

So, even know it was rushed, I had travel problems, and didn’t have time to contact anyone, I had a great time at the show, just wandering and asking questions… I feel inspired to think outside the box, and have some great new resources to share with my clients.

Albarosa has the most honest style of anyone I know…it’s part of her. When you go for dinner, you sit in vintage McGuire chairs, and are served mint tea from a Maiolica pitcher. You know the type? She doesn’t have to try hard to live a beautiful life. She is an accomplished photographer and designer; last year one of her clients purchased a large painting from me- one of my favourites. Albarosa can help you live a beautiful life too…she does design and art consulting, and has a gallery of her stunning photography on her website. Brillante is a great name for her blog…she is exceptional, bright and one of the best!

Should I Paint It?

Over the last week, I have been changing things up at my studio…this is a little niche off the main large space that has great light; I use it to meet clients and have my morning coffee.

I was thinking of painting the old Ikea table tomorrow, and applying nail head trim on all 4 aprons. I just don’t have anything in that warm pine colour. What do you think? Would you paint it? If so, black, white, or warm gray?

For this tutorial, we are working from photo. This office/library designed by Greet Lefevre has deep shadows and fine liner work, because of the panelling, which also requires some lighting and wood graining techniques. Don’t be afraid of dark shadows; they will give your drawing dimension. And be a little looser in applying your colour and pen weights- that’s the charm of a hand drawing.

Also, sometimes a gesture of an object is better than too much detail. Just like Interior Design, you read it as a gestalt, not as individual objects.

Welcome to the first in my video series- #1 Yellow and Blue Office.

Over the last couple of years, there has been interest in me teaching what I do with architectural markers. I’ve always said that anyone can do it, and there are techniques…so here’s the formula that I use typically for un-built spaces. Instead of a computer model, you can also use a photo, replacing and deleting items. I call this the substrate, and it’s the basis for your perspective and rendering. Of course, there are kinds of drawings for ID, from napkin sketches to finished watercolours…

Please bare with me, as this is a learning experience for us, and I had to let some control go just to finish this first video…I knew nothing about the filming process, and it’s more difficult than I thought.

This video is the demo/prototype version for building the series, and I am excited to share it with you. Please, be nice, it took allot for me to put myself out there, and like many of us, I cringed at the inflection of my voice, or a simple hand gesture. My need to share some of the rendering skills I’ve gained, outweighs the fear.

I’m excited…and thanks to all of you for the emails…let’s see how this goes :)

Materials used in this rendering:

Light table set up (glass, lamp and heavy books will do). If you don’t have piece of glass, consider the “as is” bin at Ikea for a glass door or small table top for one of their cheap end tables; just make sure it’s long enough. Always use tempered glass with a finished edge!

Paper: both ledger size plain paper and archival rag paper- Bienfang Graphics 360- 100% rag translucent marker paper (this is like tracing paper, but it doesn’t bleed, is thicker and is able to handle the marker manipulation) these sizes are approximate, and you can work smaller or larger if you like. I have a scanner that scans up to ledger size (11x17). Just ask the clerk for marker paper- archival.
Drafting tape; it’s less sticky than regular masking tape, but that will do too…just put it on your pants or skin first to get most of the stickiness off.

Black fine liner pens: Copic Multiliner SP .03, and .05, Staedtler pigment liner .1 (an assorted pack of thicknesses is a better deal)

Artist pen by Faber-Castell in the B thickness; this is a paint brush type tip- a multipack of greys and a multipack of colour is a better deal, but for this dwg, I used 199 (dark gray), 272 (light gray),174 (green), and 247 (blue). There was a quick use of a thicker 180 (raw umber) for the desk, but I went over it with the darker brown to fix it; still this is a useful thickness and colour, and will be used in future dwgs, so I would recommend it

Graphic pen 3000 duo tip by Staedtler Mars in 55 (green). These are some of my favourite paint pens, because they pool.

Copic Markers in W5 (Warm Gray #5), E49 (Dark Brown), 110 (Special Black), E43 (Dull Ivory)
Touch Markers CG5 (Cool Gray)
Prismacolour 96 (Blondwood)
Letraset Tria Marker in 120T (Medium Yellow)
A gold roller ball gel type pen
A dual tipped black Sharpie
Signo pigment ink in UM-153 White

Have you been over to visit Tobi Fairley during her Design Summer Camp? It looks like a great escape…I wish I was there in person to attend. I’m taking a bit of time off this summer, but it got me thinking about a segment I did for Breakfast Television a couple of years ago. They asked me to talk about outdoor living; I started with the simple idea of a woodpile (I have a thing about woodpiles), and ended with this feeling of a fun campsite, with netting, games, furs, hot chocolate and games…all in the TV studio. The combination of luxury and rustic is one of my favourites.

I’ll be around the campfire :) See you there!

Summer Rain- Inspiration to Paint

I love these pieces…”Summer Rain 1 and 2”…by Lanie Loreth. Some of her work is older in style, but these are very lovely. It’s difficult to get a runny consistency with acrylics, but with some of the new mediums, you can do it without creating too much transparency, or losing too much of the chroma. It’s fun to work with acrylic mediums, and if the weather is nice next week, I plan on taking the easel and ipod dock outside.

I was born on the east coast (Glace Bay NS) and grew up on the west coast (Ucluelet BC), crossed the country once in a 1977 Ford Pinto, and once on a train. It’s the country of my mother, her mother, and her mother’s origin. The sea has sustained my family, and the vast wilderness invites you into moments of solitude. Most of us live close to the border, but if you go north in any of the provinces, you will meet down-home people that will take you in, give you a meal and share their lives with you…it’s a country of polar opposites…of style, pride, tolerance and openness. It’s where I love to return, and am happy to call home.

A “student” of mine from Greece has been sending me updates on his rendering skills, since discovering my blog, and I have been blown away by his progress! Recently I received this project presentation board which made me giddy with excitement. I’m thrilled to share Anastassis’s progress with you (with his ok). He has used SketchUp to create a basic drawing of the space, producing a measured perspective, then drawn in all of the details by hand. It’s tricky to know how far to go with each, but my opinion is that he has done an amazing job. The shadows, the woven details on the chair, representation and choice of materials…all great :)

Oh to live in that climate!!

I truly believe that hand drawings are more helpful for the designer and the client. They don’t expect later, that he sofa be that exact wood tone, or colour. Computer rendered drawings don’t leave room for that; a client looks at it, and thinks they are getting EXACTLY what they see. With hand renderings, you are able to give a feel for the space, without the expectation to convey every detail.

Just like interior objects, I feel we are going back to things made by hand, and the interface of the computer, in my opinion shouldn’t be used from the beginning of the design process until the end…something is lost. Design and drawing go hand in hand, one cannot happen without the other.

My husband says I need to teach whether people want it or not…it’s true; this feeds that inner teacher in me…

I'm also sending you the CAD proposal for the interior (living and dining areas). I would immensely appreciate any comments and crit about the design. The client said she would appreciate a harmonious transition from the outside in, so I went a bit Tuscany (baked clay, corn yellow, soft greens etc)

Rendering to Finished Space

Designer Jacquie Cao hired me last year, and has been gracious enough to send me updates…here is the finished kitchen, and the original rendering from floor plan and specs…the lighting is stunning isn’t it?
